PROBLEM:

Multiple commercial food equipment OEM’s outlined a need for a very inexpensive, no frills, replacement for a bulb and capillary tube (B&C) mechanical thermostat, with integral knob. They wanted it to outperform the existing thermometers in reliability, since they often did not make it through the warranty period.

ELAN SOLUTION:

Elan designed the eSTAT-LC as a low-cost effective replacement for mechanical thermostats.

RESULTS:

Today, many commercial OEMs rely on the eSTAT-LC for their most basic temperature control applications. While the B&C thermostat is more expensive than the mechanical ones, the OEMs have experienced a reduction in the reduced number of annual warranty claims because the product is so much more reliable.

A sleek electronic temperature control with display that replaces mechanical thermostats, thermometer & timer, for cook and hold ovens, rethermalization, warmers, and banquet carts. It is an electronic thermostat with integrated shaft and selectordisplay. 1 SKU can support multiple temperature ranges via DIP switch. Add 2nd pot for 2nd temp set-point (Cook & Hold). 1K RTD sold separately.

Case Study:

PROBLEM:

A commercial food equipment OEM wanted to improve temperature performance, reduce field warranty claims, and reduce system cost of existing mechanical temperature control and temperature indicators on Holding Cabinets and Cook & Hold cabinets.

ELAN SOLUTION:

Elan reviewed the customer’s existing design which included (2) bulb & capillary thermostats, (1) bulb & capillary thermometer and a separate mechanical timer on some models. Elan designed the eSTAT30iD control to replace them all, plus provide a host of selectable features for easy-to-use operation, high performance temperature control and dual-voltage input which eliminated the need for a separate costly transformer.

RESULTS:

The control has been in production for nearly ten years, and the field warranty claims plummeted as the manufacturing throughput increased. The temperature control performance has improved so significantly, it is now a leading selling point for their product, is featured in their literature and has been awarded the industry ‘Best in Class’ rating for multiple years. The control operates in multiple products, with model-specific performance selected via DIP-switch. The OEM subsequently approached Elan to make a button-version only (no knob) version, which is now the standard offering in their highest volume design.

Case Study:

PROBLEM:

Residential and commercial applications were in general need of mechanical bulb and capillary tube (B&C) thermostats with greater functionality. The existing ones on the market were inaccurate (particularly at the limits of their operation), and despite the required, tedious and extended calibration routine, they would still drift over time and were prone to failure and other shortcomings.

ELAN SOLUTION:

Elan developed an electronic equivalent with metal shaft and electronic internals that fits into the same footprint as a B&C thermostat and uses a highly accurate RTD temperature probe input. The control requires no calibration on the manufacturing line.

RESULTS:

Multiple luxury appliance OEM’s have replaced their lesser B&C thermostats with Elan’s eSTAT10i, which also provides additional operating features for faster preheating, variable temperature offsets, etc. To the end customer the look is the same, but the performance is far superior and suitable for the high-performance demanded by these OEMs and their customers. Also, a single SKU eSTAT10i thermostat can serve small and large cavity ovens and griddles. OEMs simply attach a different header block on the manufacturing line to access the different operating programThis provides manufacturing flexibility and eliminate the previous inventory burden of carrying multiple B&C thermostats to support different products. The eSTAT10i can be found in thousands of luxury ranges in the U.S. and worldwide.

The eSTAT30SB replaces mechanical thermostats with a highly accurate, reliable electronic control. The eSTAT30SB retains a knob input. Elan’s selector mounting matches industry standard (2–#8 screws on 1.312 center) or use your own 10K potentiometer. Add a second selector and the eSTAT30SBD can replace cook and hold thermostats.

The eSTAT30SB stores dozens of operating models (tailored for the OEM) accessed via DIP-switch. This aids the OEM in standardizing product offering, replacing multiple inventory items with a single SKU, and reducing time to market for new products. The eSTAT30SB also eliminates a long calibration process during manufacturing which is common to mechanical thermostats.

 

Case Study:

PROBLEM:

A commercial food equipment OEM came to Elan requesting a solution for the inaccurate performance of the bulb & capillary (B&C) tube mechanical thermostats on their electric griddle. Also, the griddle was unable to maintain an accurate surface temperature because of the thickness of the griddle plate and the location of the temperature probe. On larger griddles, the most central cooking surface heated differently than the outer griddle surface.

ELAN SOLUTION:

Elan’s eSTAT30SBD provided the answer the OEM needed. First, the eSTAT30SB RTD circuit significantly improved the accuracy over the B&C thermostat. Second, Elan created a variable offset table which was programmed into the thermostat, taking into account the thermal characteristics of the plate. Third, Elan created an offset table for the thermostat any time it was installed in a ‘middle’ location, accessible via DIP-switch on the control.

RESULTS:

The eSTAT30SBD has been in production in the OEM’s line for many years and they are thoroughly pleased with the innovation and high performance it has brought to their product line. As the OEM has modified the look and functionality of the griddle, Elan has worked alongside them to redesign the control to suit their needs.

ELAN SOLUTION:

Elan addressed all these issues with the eSTAT30SBD, an accurate, flexible, easy-to-use and versatile product. The eSTAT30SBD is an ideal thermostat for many heated commercial foodservice applications, with a switch-mode power supply (80~264VAC; 50/60Hz) and CB report that insures OEMs can use it for international applications.

RESULTS:

Two examples highlight the inherent advantages of Elan’s eSTAT30SBD.

For one commercial foodservice OEM, Elan configured the eSTAT30SBD with buttons and a horizontal configuration. The cost savings, accuracy and reliability of the eSTAT30SBD control has allowed them to extend their ‘Best in Class’ status to their lower cost end product while maintaining the unique look and feel and common user experience across their product catalog. A DIP-switch selects temperature ranges and operating characteristics; a single SKU eSTAT30SBD has replaced multiple previous thermostats.

For a second OEM, Elan configured the eSTAT30SBD with knob input for temperature adjust, vertical orientation and a separate detachable relay output for moisture addition. This was an ideal solution to prevent an ‘optional’ feature from becoming a cost-burden for every control. Multiple temperature ranges are served from the same eSTAT30SBD, selected via DIP-switch, including a very accurate proofing range (90~110F). The OEM has landed new chain accounts based on the performance of their equipment utilizing the eSTAT30SBD.
